Fast food is a staple of American dining. Whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee at Starbucks, a burger at McDonald’s, or a burrito from Taco Bell, fast food chains are everywhere. They offer quick service and affordable meals that fit busy schedules. But with so many options, which fast food chains stand out as the best, and which leave customers wanting more?
A recent study from CouponBirds aimed to find out by analyzing customer reviews and ranking America’s top fast food chains. The results are in, and some might catch you off guard.
America’s Favorite: Chick-fil-A Takes the Top Spot
According to the study, Chick-fil-A emerged as America’s favorite fast-food chain, with a customer satisfaction score of 3.95 out of 5. Known for its friendly service, quality chicken sandwiches, and consistent operations, it’s no surprise that this “super-chain” (having 1,000 or more locations) secured the top spot.
Behind Chick-fil-A was Five Guys, with a close score of 3.85 out of 5. This burger joint has won many fans with its juicy burgers, generous portions, and customizable toppings. Another fan favorite, Jersey Mike’s Subs, took third place with a rating of 3.76 out of 5, making it one of the top contenders in the sandwich category.
Waffle House and Starbucks rounded out the top five, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively. Waffle House has long been a favorite for its diner-style breakfast fare, while Starbucks has captured the coffee market with its extensive menu and mobile ordering convenience.
The Best of Medium and Small Chains
The study continued beyond the largest chains. It also examined medium-sized chains with between 100 and 1,000 locations and small franchises with 4 to 100 locations.
In the medium chain category, In-N-Out came out on top with an impressive rating of 4.21 out of 5. Famous for its simple yet delicious burgers and fresh ingredients, In-N-Out has long enjoyed a cult following, particularly on the West Coast.
The Acai Republic earned the highest rating for small franchises, scoring an impressive 4.44 out of 5. It specializes in healthy, acai-based bowls and smoothies, appealing to customers looking for nutritious, flavorful options.
The Worst Fast Food Chains in America
Only some fast food chains fared so well in this study. Taco John’s ranked America’s worst fast food chain, earning a disappointing score of 2.61 out of 5. This Tex-Mex chain, which operates primarily in the Midwest, failed to impress customers, and its ranking may surprise some.
Other chains that scored poorly include McDonald’s, which earned a surprisingly low score of 2.75 out of 5. Despite being one of the world’s most recognizable fast food brands, McDonald’s faces criticism for its service issues, including its notoriously broken soft-serve ice cream machines.
Bobby’s Burgers by celebrity chef Bobby Flay and Wahlburgers by the Wahlberg brothers made the list of worst-rated chains, along with Popeyes, which ranked just above Taco John’s.
What Does This Mean for Fast Food Fans?
These rankings reveal that while popular chains like McDonald’s and Popeyes may have large followings, customer satisfaction sometimes matches brand popularity. Some smaller or regional chains are doing a better job keeping their customers happy.
Interestingly, the study also found that certain states were home to better-rated chains. California and West Virginia topped the list of states with the highest-rated fast food chains, suggesting that geography might play a role in where customers find the best fast food experiences.
What’s Next in Fast Food?
With Chick-fil-A sitting at the top for now, it’s clear that customers value consistent service and high-quality food. However, fast food favorites can change quickly. This past summer, Chick-fil-A was briefly dethroned from its top spot, showing that the fast food game constantly evolves.
While Taco John’s and others may struggle, the fast food industry always has room for improvement. After all, customer preferences are always changing, and fast food chains are constantly competing to win over America’s taste buds.
So, whether you’re loyal to Chick-fil-A, Five Guys, or your local In-N-Out, this study gives a good snapshot of how Americans feel about their favorite (and least favorite) fast food chains in 2024. Who knows—by next year, we might see new contenders shaking up the rankings.
